GOMANKI-ZUKA(BRIAL MOUND)

The Nambokucho period(1336-92A.D.)is known as the Period of the Northern and the Southern Dynasties. During this time two rival Emperors were vying for control over Japan. The Emperor of the Southern Court,Go-Daigo,appointed his son. Prince Kanenaga,to the position ob general of the Army of Western Subjugation, and sent him to Kyushu to consolldate his power there. Prince Kanenaga and his army camped near Mt.Kora,Mt.Minou,and Taniyama Castle. In the environs of the Chikugo River Kanenaga's forty thousand soldiers came from the courts ob Kikuchi Takemitsu and Kusano Nagayuki. In the 14th year of the Shohei Era(1359A.D.) Prince Kanenaga moved his army to Ohara, whitch is between Miyanojin and the present city of Ogori. In fact,Miyanojin means "The Prince's Encampment",and it was have that Prince Kanenaga established his main headquarters. This area has been known as Miyanojin ever since. It was here that his army fought a pitched battle with the forces ob Shoni Yorihisa, shoes sixty thousand soldiers came from Ajisaka, north of the Chikugo River. This great contest has gone down in history as the Batte ob Ohara, or the battle of the Chikugo River, and is celebrated as one ob the three great battles of the feudal age. It is said that more than 25,000 soldiers died in the fighting. The soldiers from both sides who were killed in the battle were all buried together in the Gomanki-zuka burial mound. The mound was moved in 1972 to meku room tor the Kyushu expressway. The original mound was much larger than the one you see today.
